If you are running a business then you are never short of people offering you advice.  If you listen to all of them then you’d think running a business is so easy that we should all be millionaires on working 2 days a week.

Life’s not like that.  Business certainly isn’t like that. Much of the advice you are offered is expensive, and much of it is rubbish, and some is both.  So we’ll keep our Handy for Business tips short, sweet and useful.

The SME Myth

There’s a common myth that the only qualification you need to advise a small business is to have been made redundant by a big business.  It’s a complete myth, but an article of faith for many of the advisors out there – the ones who are trying to make a living as consultants after being fired by their bank or accountancy firm.  Don’t let them waste your time & money.  Ask if they have ever run a successful small business themselves.  If they haven’t, then show them the door.

Being part of a big corporate is completely different to running your own business.  You don;t have the corporate HR team, IT team and legal team to fall back on: you have to think for yourself.
